A Brahmaputra River Cruise, Route by Route

A Brahmaputra river cruise is a small-ship journey through Assam on one of Asia’s widest, wildest rivers. The ships are tiny by world standards, the riverbanks are lined with paddy fields, sandbars and tea gardens rather than cities, and the big draws are the one-horned rhinos of Kaziranga, the monasteries of Majuli island and village life that few foreign visitors ever see.

Every cruise on this river covers only part of it, so the real choice is which stretch. This site is built around that decision. It lays out the published routes section by section, explains what each one adds, and covers the practical side: getting to Guwahati, how ships reach Kaziranga, the short season and the evening cruises you can take in Guwahati before you board. For an overview of the ships and lines themselves, see our live sister site Brahmaputra River Cruise; for choosing between the Ganges, the Brahmaputra and Kerala, see India River Cruising.

Who Runs Cruises in Assam

Only a handful of companies sail this river. Assam Bengal Navigation has operated small ships here for many years and publishes the widest spread of routes, from a three-night taster to ten nights. Pandaw sells seven- and ten-night Brahmaputra voyages on its RV Kindat Pandaw for 2026 to 2028. The MV Mahabaahu of Adventure Resorts & Cruises is sold through specialist tour companies. Ships typically carry a few dozen guests at most.

Because space is so limited and the season is short, departures from November to February fill early. Our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise check what is actually available for your dates before suggesting a route.

Timing in One Paragraph

Cruising runs in the dry months, roughly late October to April and into early May, when the river has dropped back inside its banks and Kaziranga is open. From about June to September the monsoon floods huge areas of the valley and the park closes. The details, including what changes from month to month, are on season and water levels.

Brahmaputra River Cruise Questions

How long is a Brahmaputra river cruise?

Published itineraries in Assam run from three nights (a Guwahati round trip) to ten nights end to end, and one operator lets you join two cruises for up to fourteen nights.

Where do Brahmaputra cruises start and finish?

Most use Guwahati at one end. Lower-river trips finish at Silghat, the mooring for Kaziranga; upper-river trips run on to Neamati Ghat near Jorhat. Some week-long and ten-night cruises return to Guwahati.

Is an Assam river cruise good for a first trip to India?

It suits travelers who prefer wildlife, villages and quiet to big-city sightseeing. Many people pair it with Delhi, Agra or a Ganges cruise from Kolkata.
