Brahmaputra Cruise Season and Water Levels
A short dry-season window, set by the river itself.
Check DatesWhen the Brahmaputra Is Cruised
The Brahmaputra cruise season is short and fixed by the river itself. Operators publish sailings from about late October to April, with one describing its season as running from the last week of October to the start of May. Outside those months, monsoon water makes the river too high and fast, and Kaziranga closes.
| Months | River and weather | Cruising |
|---|---|---|
| Late Oct – Nov | Water falling after the monsoon; green landscape | Season opens; Kaziranga reopens in October |
| Dec – Feb | Cool, dry; misty mornings on the river | Peak months; book early |
| Mar – Apr | Warming up; river still low | Fewer departures; ask about space |
| May | Pre-monsoon heat and storms | Final departures only |
| Jun – Sep | Monsoon floods | No cruising; Kaziranga closed |
Low Water and Changing Channels

The Brahmaputra is a braided river: its channels and sandbars move every year. Late in the dry season the main channel can be shallow, and pilots pick their way between bars, which is why itineraries carry the warning that they depend on river and weather conditions. Moorings may change, and a stop may be reached by tender boat or by road instead. Small, shallow-draft ships are what make cruising possible here at all.
Visas, Health and Insurance
On deck, winter mornings can be cool and misty enough for a fleece, while afternoons are usually warm and sunny; by April the heat and humidity build. Pack layers either way.
U.S. citizens need an Indian visa, usually the e-Visa applied for online before travel. Read the U.S. State Department’s advisory for India and for the regions on your route, see a travel clinic about vaccinations and malaria precautions for Assam, and buy insurance with medical evacuation cover; Cruise & Travel Insurance explains what to look for. Season Questions
What is the best month for a Brahmaputra river cruise?
November to March is the heart of the season: Kaziranga is open, skies are generally clear and days are pleasant. October and April are shoulder months with fewer departures.
Why are there no cruises in summer?
The monsoon, roughly June to September, swells the river and floods much of the valley, including Kaziranga, which closes to visitors. Operators stop sailing for the season.
Booking Window
With so few ships and cabins, December and January departures are often the first to go. Booking several months ahead is sensible for peak dates; shoulder-season sailings in October, March and April sometimes have more space.
