Kaziranga River Cruise
Moor beside the park, then go looking for one-horned rhinos by jeep.

“Kaziranga river cruise” really means a Brahmaputra cruise that stops long enough for you to explore Kaziranga National Park on land. The park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stretches along the river’s south bank, and its grasslands, wetlands and forest are home to the greater one-horned rhinoceros, wild water buffalo, swamp deer, elephants and tigers.

Ships moor on the river near the park, usually at Silghat, and the visit is made by road: a short drive to the park gates, then jeep safaris with park guides. Some programs add lunch at a riverside lodge between safaris.
The Safari Ranges
| Range | Also called | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Central | Kohora | The most visited range and a frequent first safari. |
| Western | Bagori | Open grassland where rhinos are often seen close to the track. |
| Burapahar | Described by one cruise operator as little visited; included on some longer programs. |
One published seven-night itinerary includes three jeep safaris across the Central, Burapahar and Western ranges over two days. Shorter cruises may include one or two. Park rules, timings and which ranges are open are set by the park authorities and can change during the season.
Which Cruises Include Kaziranga
- Four-night and seven-night lower-river cruises from Guwahati that finish at Silghat.
- Seven-night upper-river cruises that start at Silghat, with Kaziranga on the first full day.
- Ten-night end-to-end voyages, and Pandaw’s seven- and ten-night loops from Guwahati.
- The three-night Guwahati taster visits Pobitora sanctuary instead of Kaziranga.

Getting the Most From the Park
- Bring binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens; animals can be close or far.
- Wear muted colors and layers: early safaris are cool, middays warm.
- Expect dust on the tracks in the dry season; a scarf or buff helps.
- Ask about adding a night at a lodge near the park before or after the cruise.

Kaziranga Questions
Does the ship sail into Kaziranga National Park?
No. The park lies on the Brahmaputra’s south bank, and ships moor nearby, typically at Silghat. Guests go into the park by jeep with park guides.
When is Kaziranga open?
The park closes every year during the monsoon floods and reopens after the rains; for 2026–27 it reopened for jeep safaris on 3 October 2026. Cruise schedules are built around the open season.
Will I definitely see a rhino?
Nothing in the wild is guaranteed, but Kaziranga holds the largest population of greater one-horned rhinoceros in the world, and sightings on a jeep safari are very common.
More Than Rhinos
Kaziranga’s wetlands draw huge numbers of resident and migratory birds in the cool season, from pelicans and storks to raptors, and the park is also known for its herds of wild water buffalo and swamp deer. Tigers live here too, though they are seldom seen from a jeep. Near the park, some cruise programs visit tea gardens and the weekly markets of nearby villages, which give a glimpse of life on the edge of a national park.
